Computer art – sometimes people think that means the computer makes the art. Some people have indeed written programs for computers to make art, but most people have not seen the results of that. I guess it is to avoid that confusion that we have moved to the term digital art. A computer is a tool for making digital art. A camera is a tool in fine art photography. I don’t think people think “Anyone could take those pictures if they just had Ansel Adams’ camera.” I know I couldn’t. But it seems people have that kind of notion with digital art. There is amazing software for digital art these days, but again, these are tools. Millions and millions of people have access to these programs, just like there are millions and millions of cameras out there. It’s what you do with the tools that matters for digital art. My computer is getting a bit long in the tooth. (Now there’s a strange expression that is even stranger when applied to a computer.) Getting a better computer is not going to make me a better artist.
